PURPOSE OF LIFE

(Originally written 1990)

Sounds like a pretty big subject for a little pamphlet, doesn’t it? I believe the answer is not as complicated as some may suppose.  I don’t think you have to climb a mountain somewhere and talk to a guru to find out.  The answer is found in the Bible, God’s word to us.  There are two scriptures that pretty well sum it up.  First, Revelation 4:11, “Thou art worthy, O Lord, to receive glory and honour and power: for thou hast created all things, and for thy pleasure they are and were created."  Then in Isaiah 43:7 in part says, “…for I have created him for my glory, I have formed him; yea, I have made him.”  Therefore based on these inspired passages, I feel confident in saying that our purpose in life is to please and glorify God.  God intended that mankind would please and glorify Him.  This is why He created the first man, Adam.  The very reason you and I are breathing air today is so that we would have the opportunity to please and glorify our Creator.   I’ll have to say that for many years I wasn't doing that.  I was pleasing myself, or trying to.  Like David (in the Bible) and everybody else, I inherited a selfish, carnal nature from Adam, (Psalms 58:3 - 51:5).  Some give vent to this nature to a greater degree than others, but we “all were by nature the children of wrath” (Ephesians 2:2-3).  As a small child I was innocent before God, but like the Apostle Paul and everybody else, I lost my innocence, (Romans 7:7-9).  Through the prayers of a Godly mother and others, and the circumstances of my life, I became dissatisfied with life and myself.  There was a void, an emptiness in my life.  One night God made me keenly aware of things I was doing that were displeasing to Him.  He was calling me out of a life of sin and worldliness to a life of righteousness.  I finally  yielded asking forgiveness and vowing to change my conduct with His help.  This simple, humble step of repentance, so necessary to obtain salvation was a giant one for me.  My pride, fear of what others would think, the doubt of whether I could live it etc. seemed like a mountain.  Only by throwing myself on the mercy of God, figuring He would somehow make a way, I took the plunge.  The miracle that took place that night took all the guilt away and made me a new creature in Christ.  Yet even with this great change there was to remain even more for me.  As I continued on with my new life in Christ I discovered an inward foe.  Like the Corinthian “babes in Christ” I was “yet carnal,” (I Cor. 3:1-3).  The disciples, before Pentecost, were “not of the world” (John 17:16) and were “in Christ” (John 15:4-5) yet in Matthew 20:20-24 they displayed carnality.  After Pentecost when they received the second work of grace termed “sanctification” or “the baptism with of the Holy Ghost,” they were different.  They were enabled to stand up against the religious Jews and history shows they were “sold out” to the place that they willingly gave up their lives for the gospel.  This second experience destroys heart carnality and supplies additional power to live for God in a consistent way.  It is not a power that knocks one down or causes one to do something unseemingly.  It is a power that enables you to stand for the right, and against the wrong.  This is explained this more fully in “Power For Living Righteously” available from this publisher.  I found out that through two works of divine grace I could fulfill my purpose in life of pleasing and glorifying God.  I only wish I hadn’t wasted so many years before this.  I found out He knew best all along how to make me happy.   We can only be truly happy by submitting to Him and fulfilling our God-given purpose of life.
